Pune Railway Division completes Electrification of 531 km Railway Lines, saving 246 Crores annually in fuel costs.

Pune Division’s railway network has reached a significant milestone as all of its 531 km of railway lines have now been electrified. This development was announced by the railway administration during a press conference held on March 5.

According to officials, this electrification project will result in annual fuel savings of Rs 246 crores. The railway network will now be supported by electric lines, resulting in reduced carbon footprint and increased efficiency.

The event was attended by several high-ranking railway officials, including Indu Dubey, the divisional manager of the Railway, Brijesh Kumar Singh, the additional divisional manager, and other senior divisional operations managers and engineers.

The electrification of the Pune Division’s railway lines will reduce the division’s yearly carbon footprint by 0.733 lakh tonnes. This development is a significant step towards achieving sustainable transportation and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.

The first electric train in the Pune Division, the Deccan Queen, has been running between Bombay and Pune since June 1st, 1930. The transition from DC to AC traction began in 2004 and was gradually finished in 2008–2009, with the Central Railway’s Pune line being electrified with 1500 DC volts.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Pune Division’s railway network and is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and the division’s financials.

“At the Pune Division, 11 pairs of mail/express trains will run on electric traction between 2022 and 2023. While electric traction is used in the Pune section, significant trains like the Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Deccan Queen, Jhelum, Duranto, and Goa Express operate there. As a result, the Pune division’s gasoline expenses have gone down dramatically” said Manoj Jhawar, public relations officer for Central Railway’s Pune Division.
