Pune: Environmentalists in Pune have raised concerns over the illegal activities taking place on the Mhatoba hill area near New India School at Bhusari colony in Kothrud.

The activities include cutting down and setting trees on fire, damaging the grass and illegal plotting. The area is known for its lush greenery and is frequented by people for exercise and relaxation. Despite being designated as Green Zone 2, these activities have been raising alarms among environmentalists.

To address the issue, a meeting was held on March 5 at Thorat Udyan near Shivaji Statue for discussion on the issue of tree conservation, setting fire on the hill, and construction in BDP section with the environmental lovers of Kothrud, Bavdhan, Warje, and nearby divisions. The meeting was attended by Bhartiya Janata Party ex MLA of Kothrud constituency Medha Kulkarni and former Corporator Ganesh Warpe alongwith many citizens who frequent the hill.

During the meeting, it was decided to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to ensure that the issue is addressed.

Srikant Pawar, member of Green Hills and Vanachari group said, “The issue will be taken again to PMC Commissioner and police department. Simultaneously we are planning to meet Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss this matter. And we will also be filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).”

He added, “Medha Kulkarni and Ganesh Warpe present in the meeting extended their support to the cause. Whereas Ganesh Warpe is getting into action immediately tomorrow with PMC and police officers. Medha has suggested another application to PMC commissioner asking for specific actions. Warpe is going to involve Khadakwasla constituency MLA Bhimrao Tapkir to raise the issue in Vidhan Sabha. It would need a lot of persuasion and consistency for the favorable results.”

Srikant Pawar has been actively working to prevent encroachment and damage to the hills in the Kothrud, Warje, and Bavdhan divisions of Pune. He has complained about the activities taking place in the area, stating that they pose a threat to the natural resources and the environment of the region.
