In a distressing incident, two individuals have been apprehended by the Pimpri Chinchwad police for allegedly deceiving Rajendra Barpatte, the father of Flight Lieutenant Kunal.

Flight Lieutenant Kunal was one of the passengers on the ill-fated Indian Air Force AN-32 aircraft that went missing over the Bay of Bengal in 2016.

The suspects employed a scheme to dupe Barpatte of Rs 39 lakh by misleading him into believing they would help him procure land to establish a technical education institute in honor of his late son.

The case was reported at Nigdi police station, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) on Thursday. The accused individuals have been charged with cheating and criminal breach of trust. According to an official from the police station, the events transpired between July 2017 and last month.

Barpatte, a retired scientist from the Central Institute of Road Transport, had intentions of establishing a technical and vocational education institute as a tribute to his son, who had similar aspirations. The arrested suspects entered into an agreement with Barpatte and received a sum of Rs 59 lakh from him. Out of this amount, Rs 10 lakh was purportedly handed over to the original landowner, and an additional Rs 10 lakh was allocated for various procedural formalities.

However, the accused failed to carry out the essential sale deed for the land, leading to a substantial loss of Rs 39 lakh for Rajendra Barpatte. The two suspects were taken into custody on Thursday following the investigation.

Flight Lieutenant Kunal was serving as a flight navigator aboard the IAF’s AN-32 aircraft during its routine flight from Chennai to Port Blair. Tragically, the aircraft went missing on the morning of July 22, 2016. Despite extensive search efforts conducted by the IAF, Navy, and Coast Guard over the Bay of Bengal, neither the 29 individuals on board nor any remnants of the aircraft were located. Flt Lt Kunal was associated with the 33 Squadron of the IAF transport squadron in the capacity of a navigating officer.
