The owners of the Katraj brand, the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producers Union, have decided to lower the price of their double-toned milk sold in pouches by Rs 2 per litre.

According to a statement released on Thursday, 1 litre milk pouches will now be available at Rs 53 starting from December 1. Additionally, the price of an extra-protein milk 250 gm pack will now be Rs 12.

Maharashtra dairy farmers have been protesting for the past few weeks against the low price that dairies are paying them for milk procurement. Currently, milk containing 3.5% fat and 8.5% SNF (Soil-Not-Fat) costs between Rs. 28 and Rs. 39 per litre, which is less than the previous, marginally higher prices.

In order to make sure they receive a fair price for their milk produce, farmers have requested government intervention. They claimed that it was not feasible for them to carry on with their procession at the current rates. In Pune, Ahmednagar, dairy farmers had agitated outside the offices of the dairies and the tehsildars, demanding justice.

Given the abundance of milk and the low demand for dairy-based products, dairies claim they are unable to pay higher prices. According to cooperative dairies, extra milk is being turned into skimmed milk powder, but exporting it has been hindered by the commodity’s low price on the global market.

Katraj’s move to lower consumer prices is interpreted as a way to pass on benefits to the customer. The dairy aims to boost sales and decrease its excess milk collection by reducing prices as well.
