Sarees are an integral part of Indian culture- look how much noise Zendaya’s shimmery dark blue beauty or Gigi Hadid’s royal chikankari glamorous saree at NMACC made across the whole internet. Traditional Indian feminine beauty is tied to the saree, and JJ Active and Tata’s Taneira sarees have banded together to give a unique blend of sarees and fitness in the name of Taneira Saree Run.

JJ Active, also known as Jayanagar Jaguars from Bangalore started an innovative running event in 2016 for all recreational runners and saree lovers, where women run together while wearing sarees. This year, the event is travelling across the nation under Taneira Sarees by conducting this program in five different cities- first in Kolkata on 12th March and now Pune too will witness this spectacle for the very first time on April 16th.

Organised within the campus of Pune University, this event has been sponsored under the flagship of Taneira Sarees of Tata Group. JJ Active is a Bangalore-based training academy for recreational runners that have thirty-three centres across the whole nation. They hold regular running events and training programs for all runners.

This event aims to bring out both the beauty and strength of Indian women and will consist of a 3 km run as well as Zumba sessions, martial arts training, dhol tasha, entertaining performances and more. Every runner will be awarded a finisher’s badge. The beautifully adorned women with all their enthusiasm and vigour give the entire marathon a carnival-like energy.

Sudakshina Chopra of JJ Active told us that the response for the run is only increasing with every passing event. The marathon, which started with only 20 women in the first event, now has an overwhelming number of participants in thousands. The 2022 Bangalore run, which took place after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic saw a total number of runners of around two thousand. The recent Kolkata event has around 4300 runners and the Pune event has already seen a high number of registrations of 3000.

She adds that they have taken all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of all runners. Only registered runners will be given entry and the running route will be strictly monitored by more than hundreds of volunteers. The route itself is closed and located inside SPPU. Security is of the utmost concern to the organising committee.

Sudakshina tells us that in Kolkata, the event saw their oldest runner yet- an 82-year-old as well as their youngest, a 7-year-old. There were many stories where the women of three generations of a family grouped together and participated in this event by wearing sarees and running with all their enthusiasm. The Taneira Run in Pune expects to see similar beautiful stories.

Addressing the media, Coach Pramod Deshpande, Race Director, Taneira Saree Run said, “Over a decade of encouraging people in fitness, we realised that women’s fitness needs more encouragement. Hence, since 2016 we have been conducting The Saree Run and inspired by the success of this initiative, we are taking it to more cities in India.”

“Taneira Saree Run is organised exclusively for women and is a celebration of the ability of women to transform generations by transforming themselves. The event is open to women and girls of all ages and will include a walk/jog fun run at any distance of their choice, for this a route of 3 km is marked. We welcome all women to come to join hands in this All Women’s Movement. Taneira Saree Run will start from the Kashaba Jadhav Krida Sankul, Pune University, Pune on 16 April 2023 and will be flagged off at 6.30 am.” he further added.
