Pune: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) & Pune District Collector to refrain from cutting trees and take good care of the existing trees in the Metro Eco Park in Ravet.

As per information from the NGT order, the applicant, Vikas Dinesh Badolia, supports sustainable development and is claiming to be directly affected by the destruction of Metro Eco Park in Ravet.

The order further states that on the said piece of land, over the past 6 to 7 years, the trees were successfully grown on the mostly rocky land and an ecosystem has been created, consisting of over 1000 trees belonging to 250 species in the said Metro Eco Park.

However, in March 2023, the applicant Vikas Badolia noticed the construction work on the land in question of the said Metro Eco Park and when he made a query, he came to know that the said land belongs to the election commission and the work of EVM machine storage godown is going on. The order continues that the Pune District Collector met with Election Commission representatives and decided to take over the land belonging to Metro Eco Park for raising construction of the EVM machine storage godown.

The Pune District Collector asked the Tahsildar of Pimpri-Chinchwad to make a panchnama of the said land in which the said land has been shown as an open and infertile land. According to the applicant Badolia, this is a false and fabricated panchnama as it has ignored the existence of the Metro Eco Park and 1000 trees belonging to 250 species.

The applicant apprehends that due to the construction of said godown, there is the likelihood that more than 200 trees will be cut, which needs to be protected. Hence, the NGT has directed the Pune District Collector & the PCMC to take care of the trees which have already been planted and would ensure that no tree will be allowed to be cut without prior permission from the tree authority in accordance with law and the trees will be taken care of.
