A team of Pune Municipal Corporation’s anti – encroachment department of Aundh Ward Office was attacked by a local mob while the officials were carrying out drive on Tuesday, said police.

“We were carrying out a drive which started around 11:00 am. The action continued smoothly for around two hours despite opposition by the locals. At around 1 pm one woman and four to five men gathered illegally with 45-50 people along with stones and wooden sticks and intercepted our work, ’’ said Gajanan Sarane officer from PMC anti-encroachment department in his complaint.

According to Sarane, they started stone pelting on his team and PMC staffers were manhandled, abused by an angry mob.

Vaishali Patkar of Aundh Vikas Mandal told that, PMC should take all stakeholders into confidence before taking any such action. “We are welcoming anti encroachment drive but PMC should talk to all such property owners because they only give these properties on rent.’’
Patkar further told that, to set up an entire shop with an encroachment is illegal but they are earning their bread and butter hence PMC handles this issue with proper care.

After the incident, the PMC team rushed to Chaturshrungi  police station to register a case in the matter.

Babasaheb Zharekar, assistant police inspector said, “As per the complaint filed by Sarane we have registered a case under relevant section and as of now one person has been arrested in this case.
