Pune: In a bid to address public health concerns caused by the increased water level in the old canal, Bharatiya Janata Party Pune District Vice President, Rahul Shewale, spearheaded an initiative to remove water hyacinth from Sadestra Nali, No. 15, Vitthal Nagar, Manjari, Lakshmi Colony, Shewalewadi, Fursungi area. The rampant growth of water hyacinth in the canal had led to a surge in mosquito population, resulting in the spread of diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya among the local citizens.

Rahul Shewale had previously met with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Health Minister Tanaji Sawant, and Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, urging them to take action to remove the water hyacinth. Promptly responding to the concerns raised, the campaign to remove the hyacinth plant was launched on April 7.

“The work of removing the water hyacinth has begun from April 7. This water hyacinth is for 7-8 kms starting from Mundhwa to Fursungi. The work is expected to complete in 10 days with the help of PMC. Due to this water hyacinth the amount of mosquitoes have increased causing health issues to residents,” said BJP Rahul Shewale, Vice President, Pune district.
