Pune: Inadequate water supply by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has become a major concern for many housing societies in the city. As a result, these societies are being forced to purchase water tankers to meet their daily water requirements. Baner, Balewadi, Mhalunge are some of the areas where residents suffer from water shortage.

Head of Pune Municipal Corporation Water Supply Department, Aniruddha Pawaskar, claims, “We have not received any complaints from housing societies regarding the need for water tankers. However, we will supply drinking water tankers to societies upon receiving complaints.” Pawaskar also expressed concern that residents are using drinking water for other purposes, which exacerbates the problem.

One such resident who is facing water shortage is Kiran Madamwar, a resident of Mhalunge living in the Aldea Espanola Township. Madamwar said, “Pune is a city surrounded by dams and rivers and it is surprising that the citizens are not receiving adequate water supply. Our society purchases 4 – 5 tankers daily, while over 25 water tankers are coming in daily across all phases of the township. The water crisis has become severe.”

The citizens can report their water supply complaints on the helpline number 020-25501383.

Another resident, Nachiket Deshpande, from Bavdhan, shared the same sentiment as Madamwar. Deshpande expressed frustration, “PMC water supply department is neither providing water tankers nor reimbursing the cost of the tankers to the societies. The cost of the water tankers is coming out of the societies’ maintenance. We had written a complaint to the PMC, but no action was taken in this regard.”

In response to these complaints, former Corporator Amol Balwadkar said, “PMC would provide drinking water tankers to housing societies that do not receive adequate water supply from the corporation.”
