In Pune, questions have been raised about significant spending discrepancies in the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan advertising campaign. Under the initiative, PMC allocated Rs. 14.5 lakh to each regional office for displaying cleanliness messages on public walls. However, a recent inquiry has revealed that some offices reported inflated expenses, raising concerns over the actual cost of these advertisements.

The advertisements from last year, which were still in good condition, were updated this year by changing the year “2023” to “2024” on existing posters. Although this modification required minimal cost, several regional offices reported expenses as high as Rs. 1 lakh for minor changes. According to a recent RTI (Right to Information) request, these costs were unexpectedly high, leading the Solid Waste Management Department to seek a detailed report on expenditures from each regional office.

PMC stated that a thorough review of the expenditure has been initiated and, if discrepancies are found, action will be taken against those responsible. Kadam emphasized the need for transparency, as minimal expenses were anticipated for the updates, contrasting sharply with the reported spending.

This investigation comes as part of a broader accountability effort within the PMC, ensuring that funds meant for public initiatives like Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan are used appropriately and efficiently.
