Pune News: Purandar Airport Land Acquisition Set To Begin Under New Method
Pune: Purandar Airport Land Acquisition Accelerates; Compensation Rates Finalised For Seven Villages
After years of delays and uncertainty, the Maharashtra government has taken a significant step toward the construction of Purandar Airport by approving the land acquisition process. In a recent high-power committee meeting, State Industrial Minister Uday Samant announced that the land will be acquired using the ‘pass through method,’ ensuring that farmers receive compensation at five times the ready reckoner rates. This decision marks a major development in the long-pending project, which has faced multiple hurdles since its announcement in 2016.
According to the official notification issued by the industries, energy, labour, and mining department, a total of 2,823 hectares of land from seven villages in Purandar taluka has been designated as an industrial area. This includes 2,753 hectares of private land and an additional 70 hectares from the state forest department. The land acquisition process will be handled by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), ensuring that work on the airport can finally commence.

The Purandar Airport project has seen multiple delays due to land acquisition disputes and political changes. Initially proposed during the BJP-led government, the project was shifted to a different location under the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. However, with the Mahayuti government returning to power, the airport is now set to be built at its originally planned site, bringing clarity to the project’s future. The government aims to complete the airport within the next five years, making it a crucial infrastructure development for the region.
Despite the approval for land acquisition, concerns remain over funding for the project. In the recently presented state budget, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar did not allocate any funds for the acquisition process. However, the issuance of the official notification on the same day as the budget presentation signals the government’s commitment to moving forward with the airport. Officials have assured that steps will be taken to secure the necessary financial resources in the coming months.
As the process begins, the government has pledged to engage with local villagers to ensure a smooth transition. Authorities have emphasized that the landowners will be fairly compensated and that the development of Purandar Airport will bring long-term economic benefits to the region. With land acquisition now officially underway, all eyes are on the next steps toward making the long-awaited airport a reality.
