On Fergusson College Road, the Pune Municipal Corporation demolished an unauthorized building spanning 7,000 square feet on Monday (4th December). The illegal shopping mall on the plot, which had up to 70 stalls and was clogging the road with traffic, was the target of the action.

A PMC official said that the mall owner had managed to get a stay from the court for eight years, but the PMC got it vacated and took action.

The lack of ventilation or natural light in the mall posed a safety risk, the PMC official continued. If the illegal shopping complex had remained standing, there would have been a greater possibility of fatalities in the event of a fire because the building lacked a firefighting system.

The plot’s owner stated that he had appealed for a stay in the high court. The demolition was completed prior to the HC issuing the final decision. In his opinion, PMC ought to have waited for some more time.

According to PMC commissioner Vikram Kumar, the administration will keep implementing the same policies. It is also possible to investigate options such as reporting crimes for encroachments, illegal structures etc.

According to a civic official, the PMC actions include demolishing food joints, rooftop restaurants, retail establishments on the plot’s front and side borders etc that are occupying roads and walkways.
