Pune, February 22, 2025: A video of rampant wrong-side driving on Pune’s Kharadi-Mundhwa Bridge has gone viral, sparking a nationwide debate on reckless road behavior. X user Nachiket Deshpande shared the footage, calling Pune a “road illiterate city,” reigniting discussions on India’s worsening traffic violations.

Pune or Pan-India Issue? Netizens Weigh In

Deshpande’s post read, “Pune is a road illiterate city. This is probably the mildest way of saying it. Look at the barrage of wrong-siders, even though a U-turn is available barely 100 meters away. Sadly, I’ve never seen @PuneCityTraffic take action.”

However, many netizens argued that the issue was not exclusive to Pune but prevalent across India.

“Change the name of the city to Hyderabad, and your tweet will still be spot on. We have our own fair share of road illiterate, egoistic, born-angry owners of the road,” a user commented.

Another user from Mumbai wrote, “I thought Pune was the worst for traffic behavior, but after spending a year in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune feels much better!”

A Chennai resident weighed in, stating, “In Chennai, there are more vehicles on the wrong side than on the right. Illiterate drivers, rampant two-wheelers, and arrogance—this is a toxic cocktail.”

Calls for Stricter Traffic Rules

Many users demanded heavier fines and strict action against violators. A concerned citizen posted, “This isn’t just about Pune—reckless wrong-side driving is rampant across Karnataka, especially on the Edappally-Panvel Highway. Traffic authorities must impose 10x higher fines. Why do people follow rules abroad but not in their own country?”

With reckless driving turning into a nationwide menace, netizens are calling for urgent traffic reforms and stronger enforcement. Will authorities take notice, or will this saga of “road illiteracy” continue unchecked?
