Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is considering making No Objection Certificates (NOCs) mandatory for rooftop restaurants. PMC wants to bring rooftop restaurants under its jurisdiction and curb the increase in illegal setups that put people and properties in danger.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Yuvraj Deshmukh, Superintending Engineer, PMC Building Permission Department, highlighted the importance of NOC, “If NOCs are made compulsory, the city will be able to keep an eye on rooftop eateries and how they operate. Giving an early warning for a probable misuse of the property will be possible with the NOC. This will ultimately help to reduce the misuse of properties for illegal rooftop food joints.”

As per information, after a huge fire at a rooftop eatery in Lulla Nagar area last November, the PMC started a drive to crack down on rooftop eateries in the city in areas like Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Bavdhan etc.

Around a week ago, PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar had given strict warnings to deputy engineers and junior engineers of the construction department to take action against every illegal rooftop hotel in Pune within 15 days or else the authorities will take strict action.

Activists state that making NOCs compulsory may be an option, but that the civic administration should take the strongest possible measures against illegal eateries to discourage others from operating.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Qaneez Sukhrani, Pune City Activist, said “This NOC move could lead to lawlessness and the proliferation of illegal rooftop restaurants. Those with money and muscle will take advantage of this kind of regularization.”
