Pimpri, December 4, 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has successfully concluded its intensive ‘Leprosy Detection Campaign’, conducted between November 17 and December 2 across all densely populated and vulnerable pockets of the city. Led by Medical Officer of Health Dr. Laxman Gophane, the initiative focused on early detection, timely treatment, and strengthening public awareness about the symptoms and management of leprosy.

As part of the campaign, medical teams visited homes in slum clusters, high-density settlements, and economically weaker areas to screen citizens for symptoms such as skin patches, loss of sensation, swelling or numbness. Individuals exhibiting any early signs were examined on the spot and directed for follow-up treatment without delay. The initiative helped many residents come forward voluntarily for check-ups, significantly boosting awareness on the importance of early medical intervention.

PCMC emphasised counselling, treatment linkage and follow-ups throughout the two-week campaign. Citizens have been urged to continue cooperating with such health initiatives to safeguard the overall wellbeing of the city.

A dedicated force of 212 medical personnel, including specialist doctors, supervisors, trained ASHA workers and male volunteers, carried out the drive under the guidance of Assistant Medical Health Officer Dr. Anjali Dhone. The teams covered 79,177 households and screened 3,61,854 individuals, identifying 11 confirmed cases of leprosy. All detected cases were immediately provided with primary medication and treatment protocols.

“Early diagnosis and prompt treatment remain the most effective tools in leprosy control. The disciplined and systematic efforts of our medical teams in reaching citizens directly are truly commendable. PCMC will continue to scale such initiatives to ensure that every resident has access to essential health services.”

-Vijaykumar Khorate, Additional Commissioner, PCMC

“Leprosy symptoms often appear subtle, and neglect can allow the disease to progress. This door-to-door campaign played a crucial role in identifying potential cases early. Through screening, treatment and counselling, we are taking firm steps towards making Pimpri Chinchwad leprosy-free.”
