Pune: PMC Begins Phase 2 Of Ganeshkhind Road Widening To Ease Traffic Between RBI And Sancheti Hospital
Pune | June 10, 2025 – The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the second phase of Ganeshkhind Road widening, focusing on the busy stretch between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Sancheti Hospital, to further alleviate traffic congestion in the city’s core areas.
This move follows the successful completion of the first phase, which widened the one-kilometre stretch from Pune University Chowk to RBI, undertaken in coordination with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to facilitate the construction of the Pune Metro Line 3 double-decker flyover.
According to PMC’s road department, the second phase covers approximately two kilometres. The project will require land acquisition from 52 properties, of which only 12 have so far handed over their land to PMC.
The remaining properties include key public and private establishments such as:
- Agriculture College
- Rahul Theatre
- Shivajinagar Police Headquarters and Chowky
- College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) hostel
- Hardikar Hospital
- LIC building
- Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education
PMC’s land and estate department is in discussions with these stakeholders to speed up the acquisition process. The estimated cost for the road widening work is ₹58 crore, excluding the land acquisition cost, which will be determined separately.
The Ganeshkhind Road is a major arterial route, connecting vital junctions such as Pune University, Shivajinagar, and the Pune railway station. The ongoing double-decker flyover project, developed by PMRDA, features a two-level structure — one for vehicular traffic and another for the elevated metro line.
The road-widening project is expected to significantly decongest traffic and support seamless integration of road and metro infrastructure once completed.
