Boy Dies Weeks After Dog Bite Despite Anti-Rabies Shots, in Thane; Triggers Concerns
Pune, January 17, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has requested a police investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of a stray dog at an animal birth control (ABC) facility run by a private agency appointed by the civic body. The matter came to light after a complaint was received regarding a video circulating on social media that allegedly shows a staff member mistreating a dog brought in for sterilisation and vaccination.
Following the complaint received on January 11, the PMC health department formally approached the Pune police commissioner and Phursungi police, seeking a thorough inquiry into the incident. The ABC centre in question is operated by the Universal Animal Welfare Society (UAWS), which works under contract with the PMC for animal welfare services.
The PMCās veterinary department issued a show-cause notice to UAWS on January 13, asking the organisation to explain the incident within 24 hours. In its response, UAWS informed the civic body that the employee seen in the video had been removed from service with immediate effect. The agency also stated that it had lodged a complaint with the Phursungi police.
Meanwhile, the dismissed staff member has denied the allegations and filed a counter-complaint, claiming that the video was edited and circulated online to defame him. Civic officials have stated that while the video appears disturbing, questions remain about its authenticity. To establish the facts and determine responsibility, the PMC has asked the police to conduct a detailed investigation and take action in accordance with the law.
