Pune, April 10, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation has attributed delays in the construction of the Sadhu Vaswani Bridge in Koregaon Park to technical and procedural challenges, even as the city police chief called for action against the contractor.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar had earlier expressed strong dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work and urged civic authorities to blacklist the contractor responsible for the project.

However, the civic administration has defended the contractor, stating that the delay is primarily due to multiple external factors, including pending railway permissions, underground water pipeline work, and other technical complications. The PMC is expected to formally communicate this position to the police commissioner through an official letter.

The bridge serves as a crucial link between Koregaon Park and the Cantonment area. The earlier structure, over 50 years old, had been deemed unsafe for traffic, prompting the civic body to demolish it and undertake construction of a new bridge.

Although the project was initiated in June 2024 with a deadline of 18 months, targeting completion by May 2026, progress has been slower than expected. Authorities now indicate that the project is likely to be completed by August 2026, reflecting a delay of around four months.

The ongoing construction has caused significant inconvenience to commuters, who are being forced to take longer routes, leading to traffic congestion in areas such as Koregaon Park, Bund Garden, and North Main Road. Officials have also warned that the situation could worsen during the monsoon season.

The PMC has stated that it will keep the police department informed about the current status of the project.
