“To make Pune congestion-free, it is essential to make effective use of the resources available with the Pune Municipal Corporation. There must be a strong focus on short-term, immediately implementable solutions, and citizens should be encouraged to use public transport, buses, and the metro. Through initiatives such as appointing ‘Jaglya’ teams that conduct on-ground inspections and identify real-time problems, the administration will work in a more dynamic and responsive manner.”

Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram stated that in 2026, the Pune Municipal Corporation will work in coordination with other government departments for road development and traffic improvement. He said that Big Data related to transport will be used to identify traffic patterns, congestion points, and problem areas, enabling targeted solutions for better traffic management. He also emphasized that future capital-intensive projects must be implemented strategically with a long-term vision.

During the workshop, City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar gave a detailed presentation on the measures to be implemented in the coming year and in the future to improve Pune’s traffic situation. Chief Engineer Rajesh Bankar and Project Department Chief Engineer Dinkar Gojare also shared information on initiatives planned to be implemented within a one-year timeframe.

The workshop placed special emphasis on the theme of Clean Air. In-depth discussions were held on how reducing the use of private vehicles and increasing the use of public transport, buses, and the metro can significantly reduce emissions and pollution. It was also stressed that more roads in Pune, like JM Road and FC Road, should be developed as pedestrian-friendly, cyclist-friendly, and people-centric streets for public life.

In the afternoon session, experts from various national and international institutions shared best practices in urban transport systems. Representatives from Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Oasis Designs, Design Point (Ahmedabad), and RKD presented their experiences and implementable solutions.

In the same session, information was shared about the ongoing work with Pune Municipal Corporation under the UrbanShift initiative of National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), New Delhi, related to Transit Oriented Development (TOD). The key objectives of this initiative include developing TOD guidelines, preparing station area plans, and implementing a pilot project in the Shivajinagar Metro Station area.

In this context, transport planner Nikhil Mijar held a dialogue on TOD with leading builders and architects of Pune. Detailed discussions were held on development and especially redevelopment around metro station areas. Experts from CREDAI, MBVA, NAREDCO, AESA, and IIA participated in this dialogue.
