Pune, May 21, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a show-cause notice to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital following the death of a six-year-old girl during an eye-related medical procedure conducted at the hospital on May 18.

According to police officials, the child had been admitted for an eye procedure linked to an earlier cataract surgery. She reportedly died around 2 pm during the treatment. The incident sparked outrage among family members, who alleged medical negligence and lodged a complaint with Alankar Police Station.

In the notice addressed to the hospital administration, PMC Assistant Health Officer Dr Suryakant Devkar directed the hospital to submit all case papers and relevant medical records to the civic health department within 24 hours. The civic body stated that the action was initiated following reports of the incident circulating on social media.

“The six-year-old patient was admitted on May 18 for eye surgery. It is understood that the surgery was conducted on the same morning and the patient died during the procedure,” the notice stated.

Police officials confirmed that statements of the treating doctors were recorded on Tuesday. Authorities added that all medical documents related to the case will be forwarded to the medical board at Sassoon General Hospital for expert evaluation.

Police clarified that while the family’s complaint has been accepted, a formal FIR will only be registered if the medical board concludes that negligence was involved in the treatment.

The child’s family, originally from Gondia, returned to their hometown after the post-mortem examination was completed.

PMC officials stated that the hospital’s compliance with provisions under the Bombay Nursing Home Act, 1949, and the Maharashtra government notification dated January 14, 2021, will also be examined as part of the inquiry.

Speaking on the matter, Dr Devkar said the civic body would review the hospital’s explanation and take further action based on the findings of the medical board and the hospital’s response.

In an official statement, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital described the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and confirmed that an internal inquiry has been initiated. The hospital stated that all relevant documents and information would be shared with police authorities and the administration of Sassoon General Hospital, while assuring complete transparency and accountability in the investigation.
