Pune: PMC Launches GIS Survey of Wells to Strengthen Groundwater Management
Pune, November 18, 2025: In a significant step towards conserving and managing the city’s groundwater resources, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a GIS-based survey of wells and handpumps across the city. The initiative, approved at a cost of ₹83.75 lakh, aims to enable better monitoring and management of groundwater levels in the future.
The PMC’s Water Supply Department supplies water to various parts of the city, but shortages and irregular supply persist in several areas. As a result, residents, businesses, and institutions often rely on wells and handpumps to meet their water needs.
Recognizing the growing demand for water, the municipal administration has decided to systematically survey and conserve the city’s groundwater resources. The GIS survey will identify the number and location of wells and handpumps, their usage patterns, and areas of excessive groundwater extraction.
“The data collected will help plan and regulate groundwater usage effectively. It will also serve as a vital resource during water scarcity and emergency situations,” said PMC officials.
The work, to be carried out by the Science and Technology Park, will also include training PMC staff in GIS techniques. The survey will cover all city wells and approximately 5,000 handpumps, paving the way for better groundwater management and long-term water sustainability in Pune.
