The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has outlined ambitious plans in its 2023-24 Environment Status Report In a bid to enhance solid waste management. The city, known for generating 2100 to 2200 metric tonnes of garbage daily, faces a crucial challenge in disposal and processing. To tackle this, PMC aims to decentralize garbage processing by establishing smaller units across various localities.
The proposed plan includes setting up six new processing plants capable of handling 750 metric tonnes of garbage per day. These facilities will be strategically located in Ramtekadi, Handewadi, Katraj, Kondhwa, and Pune Cantonment. Additionally, efforts are underway to generate electricity from waste at Ramtekadi, processing 350 metric tonnes daily. PMC has also initiated waste-to-biogas conversion at Talegaon MIDC with a capacity of 120 metric tonnes per day.
PMC’s current infrastructure enables processing of 900 to 950 metric tonnes of waste daily, aiming to cover both wet and dry waste effectively. This move aligns with the civic body’s goal to manage the city’s increasing waste production sustainably.
Furthermore, PMC’s efforts extend to curbing air pollution through eco-friendly public transport solutions. Out of 1887 PMPML buses in operation, a significant 88%—amounting to 1660 buses—run on environmentally friendly fuels. This initiative is part of broader measures to reduce the city’s carbon footprint amidst a rising number of vehicles, which surged to 3,863,849 in 2023.
The decentralization of garbage processing and the shift towards eco-friendly transport mark significant steps towards achieving sustainable urban development in Pune.
