Pune: PMC Slaughterhouse Reopens With MPCB-Mandated Safety And Compliance Measures
Pune, September 5, 2025: After nearly two months of closure, Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) sole slaughterhouse has resumed operations under strict directives from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The abattoir was shut on June 24, 2025, due to violations of environmental laws and pollution-related lapses, disrupting meat supply across the city.
Officials confirmed that operations have restarted with rigorous compliance requirements to maintain hygiene and environmental safety. The facility currently slaughters only 10 to 20 animals daily, though it has a capacity for 150 large and 200 small animals. Work is ongoing to enhance the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) capacity and install a blood processing unit. Plans are also underway to adopt modern technology for improved hygiene and operational efficiency.
MPCB’s conditional approval, granted on August 14, mandates proper functioning of the ETP, recycling of treated effluent, and use of residual discharge strictly for on-site gardening after meeting set standards. The board has prohibited release of untreated effluent outside the premises.
Additionally, PMC must follow solid waste management protocols recommended by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), control foul odours, and submit quarterly compliance reports. An electronic bank guarantee of ₹2 lakh has also been deposited with MPCB to ensure adherence to norms.
MPCB has warned that any non-compliance will invite strict legal action, including forfeiture of the bank guarantee and potential closure of the facility. The reopening is expected to stabilise Pune’s meat supply and provide relief to local traders who faced significant losses during the shutdown.
