Pune: PMC Speeds Up Chamber Levelling Drive Across City, 1283 Fixed So FarĀ
Pune, March 23, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has accelerated its ongoing citywide campaign to bring roadside chambers to the same level as roads, aiming to improve commuter safety and road conditions.
The initiative gained momentum following directives from Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, who instructed officials to increase the pace of work and submit daily progress reports during a recent review meeting.
According to civic officials, around 1,283 chambers including those linked to stormwater drains and sewer lines have already been levelled across the city. The road department is overseeing stormwater chambers, while the drainage department is handling sewer-related work.
The primary objective of the drive is to prevent accidents caused by uneven or sunken chamber covers, which often become hazardous after road resurfacing. To expedite the process, multiple contractors have been deployed across wards, with progress being closely monitored at the administrative level.
However, the intensified work has drawn concerns from residents, particularly due to construction activities carried out during night hours. Students and locals have reported disturbances from road cutting and repair work, especially during the ongoing examination season.
Civic authorities have acknowledged the issue and stated that efforts are being made to carry out the work in a manner that minimizes inconvenience to citizens.
The campaign was originally launched on December 15 last year as part of PMCās larger initiative to ensure pothole-free roads, following directions from the Bombay High Court. Initially implemented along a specific route for an international cycling event, the project has now been expanded to cover the entire city.
