Pune: PMC Starts Construction of Rs 230 Crore Water Supply Project for Lohegaon-Wagholi
The civic administration has finally initiated the groundwork for the much-anticipated water supply scheme for the Lohegaon and Wagholi areas. With a projected cost of around Rs 230 crore, this extensive project is expected to be completed within the next two-and-a-half years.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appointed two contractors to lay 430 kilometers of distribution and transmission lines and to construct nine new overhead water tanks. The water for this project will be sourced from the Bhama Askhed dam, which currently serves the water needs of eastern regions such as Wadgaonsheri and Chandannagar.
“Once the project is complete, water will be supplied through newly laid pipelines to these areas,” said a PMC official. Local MLA Ashok Pawar emphasized the importance of completing the work promptly. “Issues related to water scarcity and lack of supply infrastructure have been raised on various platforms and at the state assembly. We are taking measures to improve the water supply and urge the state government to allocate sufficient funds to avoid any hurdles in its progress,” Pawar stated.
Lohegaon and Wagholi were incorporated into the PMC limits in 2021. However, residents have reported that the water supply has not improved significantly since their inclusion. PMC officials mentioned that the project implementation started in these areas a few days ago. “The work order was issued about four months ago. The initial work includes laying pipelines and constructing overhead tanks. The project will cover the remaining parts of Lohegaon and almost all areas of Wagholi,” an official explained.
Vadgaonsheri MLA Sunil Tingre has directed the civic administration to expedite the project. In addition to the Lohegaon-Wagholi project, PMC is executing similar water supply projects in other merged areas in a phased manner.
This significant infrastructure project aims to address the long-standing water issues in the Lohegaon and Wagholi areas, promising residents a reliable and improved water supply once completed.
