The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has introduced an 18-month ‘Traffic Congestion Mitigation Plan’ to tackle heavy traffic at 17 major junctions on the outskirts of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The plan includes a three-month design phase, followed by 15 months of project execution.

Traffic congestion has been reported at three junctions in Maval taluka, four in Mulshi, three in Shirur, and seven in Haveli taluka. To address these issues, PMRDA issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) in late January, inviting agencies to submit their proposals by February 3, 2025.

Yogesh Mhase, PMRDA commissioner, stated that the 2018-19 Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) highlighted severe congestion at several junctions, including Loni Kalbhor, Wagholi, Chakan, Shikrapur, and Uruli Kanchan. Poor infrastructure and narrow roads were identified as key contributors to the problem, especially for heavy vehicles.

The plan involves widening roads and junctions, which will require land acquisition. PMRDA aims to obtain land from the state government and compensate private owners using mechanisms like Transfer Development Rights (TDR).

Consultants will assess current traffic conditions through site visits, volume counts, and surveys. They will analyze junction capacities, propose design improvements, and suggest measures like pedestrian infrastructure, traffic calming, and signal timing adjustments. A preliminary report will be created, followed by a final design based on stakeholder feedback.

Once finalized, PMRDA will appoint a contractor to execute the plan. The consultants will assist with trial runs and monitor the results for six months, ensuring the effectiveness of the improvements before submitting a post-implementation report.
