Pune: Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar presented the much-anticipated Pune Police Annual Crime Report 2024 on Thursday, revealing significant trends in the city’s crime landscape. The report detailed declines in murder and attempted murder cases but highlighted an increase in crimes like cheating, rape, and molestation. Commissioner Kumar also shared the police department’s vision for 2025, focusing on enhanced safety measures and technological advancements.

Key Highlights of the Crime Report

  • Murder cases fell by 9% in 2024, with 93 cases compared to 101 in 2023.
  • Attempt-to-murder cases dropped by 24%, with 186 cases in 2024, down from 244 in 2023.

  • Cheating cases saw a surge, with 2,021 registered in 2024, compared to 1,108 in 2023. These include cybercrimes, economic offences, and land-grabbing cases.
  • Rape cases increased to 505 in 2024, up from 410 in 2023. Molestation cases rose to 864 in 2024, compared to 775 in the previous year.

Commissioner Kumar attributed the rise in rape and molestation cases to “prompt and free registration of offences relating to women.” He emphasized the proactive measures taken for women’s safety, including the toll-free helpline 1091 and WhatsApp complaints number 8975953100, ensuring quick response from police personnel.

Law and Order in 2024

The Pune Police successfully managed large-scale events such as the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, Ganeshotsav, and the Palakhi festival, with no reports of communal or caste-related violence throughout the year.

Vision for 2025

Commissioner Kumar unveiled the department’s goals for 2025:

  • Reducing murder cases to fewer than 75.
  • Strengthening women’s safety measures.
  • Reducing street crimes and improving traffic management.
  • Enhancing the Cyber Police Station’s capabilities and utilizing technology for better policing.
  • Operationalizing the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) and activating 2,800 CCTV cameras across the city.

Additionally, “safety nets” will be installed at ghat areas to prevent accidents.

Crime Management and Traffic Solutions

The police department has implemented a “zero-tolerance” policy towards habitual offenders, targeting individuals with more than two criminal cases. High-profile cases from 2024, including the Porsche hit-and-run, Andekar murder, Bopdev Ghat rape, and Satish Wagh murder, have seen strong chargesheets submitted for strict judicial action.

On the traffic front, 367 congested spots were identified, with improvements noted in areas such as University Chowk, Solapur Road, Nagar Road, and Navale Bridge.
