In a crackdown on illegal drug sales, the Shivajinagar police have arrested two men, Deepak Wadekar and Sajan Jadhav, for allegedly selling Mephentermine Sulphate injections, a cardiac stimulant misused by young gym-goers as performance-enhancement drugs.

The police seized 14 injection vials and a car from the accused, who claimed to have used the injections for bodybuilding. However, they did not have a prescription or bill for the drugs.

Mephentermine Sulphate injections are primarily used to treat hypotension (low blood pressure) but are misused by bodybuilders to work out longer and gain muscle. Prolonged use can cause high blood pressure, skin rash, difficulty breathing, and other health issues.

The illegal trade of Mephentermine Sulphate injections is reportedly conducted by medical shops, distributors, protein sellers, gym instructors, and trainers, who sell a 10ml vial for ₹500 to ₹5,000, despite its normal cost being ₹220.

The accused have been booked under Sections 278, 125, and 3 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police are investigating further to uncover the extent of the illegal trade.
