Pune: Pune Police Commissioner Ritesh Kumar has ordered every police station in Pune to verify and check all the necessary documents of all auto-rickshaws plying in the city immediately. He also ordered them to take strict action against them in case the documents are missing.

The decision comes due to rising incidents of harassment by auto drivers in the city. Recently, on June 20, a woman techie was harassed when she was travelling from her office to her home at Handewadi at around 3:30 am in an Uber auto-rickshaw. The auto-rickshaw driver took her to a different location and taking advantage of the dark, molested her and tried to rape her after which she bravely saved herself from the driver’s clutches and jumped out of the auto-rickshaw. She and her husband chased the auto-rickshaw which later overturned. The husband caught the driver and handed him to Wanowrie police.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Bhausaheb Pathare, Senior Police Inspector, Wanowrie Police Station said, “Police commissioner Ritesh Kumar has ordered all of the police stations to strictly monitor, check and verify if the auto-rickshaw drivers have all the relevant documents. The police have started the verification work. Strict instructions have been given to them. If an auto-rickshaw driver has no documents or any documents are not there, stringent action will be taken against them.”

As per Pathare’s information, documents of more than 1000 auto rickshaws will be thoroughly checked and verified.
