The Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has intensified efforts against illicit businesses, even as gutkha sales continue openly in the city.
This follows the exposure of a list of 55 major suppliers on social media, causing a stir in the region.
Commissioner Kumar has devised stringent measures to eradicate unlawful activities, including compiling a list of notorious offenders and issuing ultimatums. Additionally, 44 individuals have been trained for enforcement duties, aiming to curb the rampant open sale of gutkha.
The revelation of the suppliers’ list has sparked widespread discussions among Pune residents about the identities behind the public sale of gutkha. While efforts are underway to constructively address the issue, the specter of open sales persists, raising concerns among locals.
The absence of effective action from the Food and Drug Administration against gutkha trade has led to administrative lapses and operational challenges. The social media disclosure naming individuals like Nizam, Prakash Bhati, Sujit, Balaji, Ganpat Seth, Tanaji Deshmukh, Prashant Bhandari, Sumit, Sham Rathod, Ankur Gupta, Ranka, Ubale, Sandeep, Arif, Khan, and Sagar Lumiya has further fueled public debate.
Commissioner Kumar’s proactive stance aims to create a robust framework to counter the gutkha menace, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated administrative action.
