Pune, June 23, 2023: Pune Police Commissioner Ritesh Kumar has taken a proactive step in launching a special security campaign aimed at safeguarding the well-being of working women, especially those employed in the IT sector, during their commute back home at night. The campaign, commencing today, will involve the collective efforts of the Crime Branch, Traffic Branch, and local police.

Commissioner Kumaarr emphasized the need to intensify night patrolling throughout the city and to implement preventive measures against individuals with a criminal history. This initiative comes in response to a recent incident in the Wanwadi area where a young computer engineer narrowly escaped a potential sexual assault by promptly alerting the control room, leading to the arrest of the autorickshaw driver involved by the Wanwadi police.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of women traveling from IT companies during late hours, prompting Commissioner Ritesh Kumaarr to take decisive action. He has instructed senior police inspectors from the crime branch and traffic police to implement necessary precautions to ensure the safety of women.

The comprehensive campaign will incorporate the following measures:

  1. Increased night patrolling by the police force across the entire city.
  2. Conducting security awareness activities in IT companies.
  3. Scrutinizing the licenses and permits of rickshaw drivers, as well as conducting thorough checks on private vehicles and drivers associated with platforms like Uber and Ola.
  4. Proactively taking preventive action against individuals with a criminal background.
  5. Deploying police personnel around Swargate, Shivajinagar bus stands, and railway stations to deter robbery incidents targeting out-of-town passengers.
  6. Imposing stringent action against reckless driving during late hours and individuals with criminal records.

Commissioner Ritesh Kumaarr also urged women to make use of the helpline number 1091, dedicated to assisting women in distress. Additionally, the Police Control Room number, 112, remains available for emergency situations.
