WhatsApp, a popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has unfortunately become a breeding ground for scams and fake messages. With its vast user base, fraudsters often target WhatsApp to deceive unsuspecting individuals.

Recently, a new scam involving a WhatsApp message promoting the download of “Pink WhatsApp” has gained significant traction. Scammers entice users with the promise of additional features in this supposed upgraded version of WhatsApp, urging them to click on a provided link.

The ‘Pink WhatsApp’ scam operates by circulating messages claiming to offer a ‘New Pink Look WhatsApp with extra features.’ However, according to the Mumbai Police, this is a ploy to trick users into downloading an app that can potentially compromise their mobile devices.

Scammers employ various techniques to lure unsuspecting victims into their traps, perpetrating cybercrimes. It is crucial for users to exercise caution and be aware of such scams and fake messages. Authorities advise relying only on trustworthy sources to avoid falling for hoax messages and to safeguard their digital well-being.

Mumbai Police warns that the ‘Pink WhatsApp’ link is a phishing attempt. Clicking on it can lead to an attack on the user’s phone, resulting in the theft of personal data or even granting remote access to the device. Scammers can exploit this information for their benefit, leading to financial losses through unauthorized access to debit and credit card details, credential misuse, and more.

If you have already downloaded the ‘Pink WhatsApp’ app, the Mumbai Police urges immediate uninstallation. Additionally, they caution against downloading anything from unofficial app stores or clicking on suspicious links.

Apart from the ‘Pink WhatsApp’ scam, other WhatsApp scams are also prevalent. Numerous users have reported receiving fraudulent calls from overseas numbers starting with prefixes such as +84, +62, +60, and others. Users are advised to exercise caution when responding to texts or calls from unfamiliar or obfuscated numbers.

Protecting oneself from scams requires staying vigilant, keeping software up to date, and using reputable sources for app downloads and updates. By remaining aware and cautious, users can mitigate the risks associated with such fraudulent activities on messaging platforms like WhatsApp.
