Pune, June 23, 2025:

In a significant move to enhance the safety of schoolchildren, the Pune Police Commissionerate has issued a final deadline of July 31 for the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in all school transport vehicles operating in Pune and surrounding areas. A joint inspection drive by the Pune Police and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) will begin shortly after to ensure strict compliance with safety norms.

The directive comes after several violations were reported on the very first day of school reopening on June 16. Despite earlier guidelines issued by the Pune police, many vehicles were found overcrowded and non-compliant with basic safety protocols.

To tackle the issue, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar convened a high-level meeting with transport officials, instructing them to enforce all school transport safety regulations without exception.

According to the June 21 circular from the Pune RTO, inspections will be carried out based on the recommendations of the School Transport Committee and the Student Safety and Physical Facilities Committee under the school education department. The framework includes routine checks for vehicle fitness and driver qualifications.

A key provision mandates annual eye checkups for all school transport drivers. Drivers are required to carry valid vision test certificates, which must be verified by school management committees. Any driver failing to present this documentation will be barred from operating school vehicles.

This is a collective effort to safeguard our students. The July 31 CCTV deadline is final. Vehicles found without surveillance cameras, those that are overcrowded, or driven by unqualified individuals will face strict legal action.

The upcoming joint inspection campaign is expected to cover all types of school transport vehicles, including vans, buses, and rickshaws. Non-compliant operators will face penalties, suspension, or seizure of their permits.

The initiative marks a significant step toward ensuring transparency, accountability, and above all, safety in Pune’s school transport system.
