Pune: Traffic and accident-prone cases have been increasing and exacerbating frequently in the city. Therefore, to address the worsening traffic situation in the city, the traffic police have decided to seek Google’s help.

Currently, many drivers use Google Maps to navigate to new places. Now, the traffic police is inclined towards seeking help from Google to solve the problems associated with traffic. Google’s intelligence will help identify the city’s traffic at a particular time and will allow greater access to enhanced measures and approaches. The correspondence with Google has already been initiated, and soon an agreement will be signed about the same.

Typically, the Pune Police force comprises 10,000 personnel, with only 900 to 950 assigned as traffic police officers. There are on average only 250 signals on main roads, and many junctions lack signals. Therefore, it is necessary to use technological advancements, if physical strength lacks in efficiency.

Similarly, from morning till late at night, commuters face various traffic challenges such as in morning and evening school buses, people hassling for work, etc are common. There is always some or the other traffic issue in congested areas such as marketplaces.

In order to address the traffic issues, the state’s Legal and Justice Department recently gave the Pune Police approval to make an agreement with Google. Amitesh Kumar, Police Commissioner has informed that to combat the traffic issues in the city, a formal contract is yet to be signed but legal procedures have been completed to take Google’s assistance.

Consequently, Google will provide information on when and where traffic congestion has occurred in the city, analyzing traffic patterns and this will result in scrutinizing the number of vehicles present. It will also aid in determining signal timings, and once traffic occurs, traffic police can use this information to control the signals and manage traffic accordingly. Google will serve its duty by identifying traffic speeds on various roads across the city, determining vehicle counts during traffic congestion, and offering alternative routes to drivers during ongoing congestion.
