Pune, June 8, 2026: Facing a rapid decline in water reserves at the Khadakwasla dam project, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to introduce alternate-day water supply across the city from June 15. The decision was taken during an all-party meeting of civic leaders and officials chaired by Mayor Manjusha Nagpure on Monday.

According to civic officials, the water storage in the four dams that supply Pune—Khadakwasla, Panshet, Temghar, and Varasgaon—has fallen to around 5 TMC. With the available water required to meet the city’s needs for the next three months, the PMC has initiated water conservation measures and is preparing to implement water cuts if rainfall remains inadequate.

The civic administration cited weather forecasts indicating the possible impact of El Niño conditions during the monsoon season. The India Meteorological Department has projected rainfall at around 90 percent of the seasonal average, raising concerns about a potential water shortage in several parts of the state. In addition to supplying drinking water, reservoir water must also be reserved for irrigation requirements and the annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage, while evaporation losses continue to reduce storage levels.

Although the irrigation department had advised the PMC in April to begin water conservation measures, the civic body had deferred any cuts until May 31. However, with no significant rainfall expected immediately despite the arrival of the monsoon in Maharashtra, authorities have now decided to proceed with restrictions.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Mayor Nagpure said discussions focused on both water conservation and supply management. She stated that alternate-day water distribution is likely to begin from June 15 and that strict restrictions will be imposed on high-consumption facilities such as vehicle washing centres and swimming pools.

PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the administration would issue a detailed circular within the next two days outlining the revised supply schedule and conservation guidelines. He added that efforts are also underway to curb leakages and prevent wastage. Citizens will be given advance notice before the new system is implemented, allowing sufficient time to make arrangements for water storage and usage.
