Pune Police Use AI To Monitor Palkhi Procession, Count 4.9 Lakh Devotees
For the first time, Pune Police deployed artificial intelligence (AI) technology to ensure smooth crowd management during the Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram Palkhi processions. The AI system recorded a total footfall of 4.9 lakh Warkaris — with 2.95 lakh in Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj’s Palkhi and 1.95 lakh in Sant Tukaram Maharaj’s procession.
AI-powered cameras were installed at strategic points across the Palkhi route, including Narveer Tanajiwadi, Sancheti Hospital junction, Shimla Office Chowk, Khandojibaba Chowk, and Laxmi Road, to monitor crowd flow in real time and aid traffic management.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that this year’s procession incorporated AI for planning, execution, and post-event analysis, enabling better control and safety despite the high turnout. The system also captured vehicle data, helping in traffic regulation as the city witnessed the arrival of over 2,600 vehicles along with the devotees.
