As temperatures soar, Pune and its surrounding areas are troubled by an increase in fire incidents, from short circuits to forest fires. The Pune Fire Brigade has urged citizens to take proactive measures to prevent such mishaps.

Devendra Potphode, Pune Fire Brigade Chief, emphasizes three key concepts: load management, maintenance and preparedness.

Load Management – Both residential and commercial users should keep power consumption below the load limit to avoid overloading circuits. Regular maintenance of wiring and equipment is crucial to prevent short circuits.

Maintenance – Ensure regular examination and clearance of storage spaces, as cluttered areas can fuel fires. Increased usage of electric appliances like fans and air conditioners in summer raises the risk of overheating and sparking.

Preparedness – Potphode stresses the importance of being prepared for fire emergencies. Buildings must adhere to fire safety standards, including maintaining fire safety equipment, proper exits, and ventilation spaces. Large public spaces like educational institutions and theaters must follow strict norms outlined in the National Building Code.

Moreover, enclosed spaces with tin roofs and walls are particularly vulnerable to heat buildup, making fire prevention crucial, especially in areas storing flammable materials.

Therefore, citizens must prioritize safety by managing loads, conducting maintenance checks and adhering to fire safety regulations by taking these precautions, as they can significantly reduce the risk of summer fires and minimize damages.
