Pune: Rainfall Exposes Kalyani Nagar’s Crumbling Infrastructure; Severe Waterlogging Sparks Chaos
Pune, March 30, 2026: A short spell of rain on Sunday exposed serious gaps in drainage infrastructure and road maintenance in Kalyani Nagar, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruption across the area.
Within minutes of rainfall, several stretches witnessed rapid accumulation of water, indicating clogged and inefficient drainage systems. The situation was further aggravated by uneven road surfaces and multiple potholes, turning daily commuting into a risky ordeal for both motorists and pedestrians.
Commuters reported that key roads were quickly submerged, causing traffic congestion during peak hours. Vehicles struggled to pass through waterlogged patches, while pedestrians were forced to navigate through stagnant water.
Major Concerns Raised by Residents:
Traffic Disruption: Waterlogging and damaged roads led to severe congestion and delays.
Accident Risk: Hidden potholes and uneven surfaces increased the likelihood of skidding and collisions.
Unsafe Roads: Poor leveling and road conditions made driving hazardous.
Pedestrian Safety:
Walking became unsafe, particularly for children and senior citizens.
Vehicle Damage: Prolonged exposure to waterlogged roads raised concerns over breakdowns and repair costs.
Health Risks: Stagnant water posed a threat of mosquito breeding and infections.
Emergency Delays: Blocked roads could hinder ambulance and fire brigade access.
Residents warned that if such conditions arise after a brief rainfall, the situation during the monsoon could be far worse, potentially bringing the locality to a standstill.
Urgent Demands to PMC:
Citizens have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take immediate action, including desilting of drainage lines, identification of chronic waterlogging spots, pothole repairs, proper road leveling, and pre-monsoon maintenance of stormwater drains. They also called for deployment of on-ground teams during rainfall and long-term infrastructure upgrades.

Voices from Residents:
“As a daily commuter, I found it extremely difficult to travel today. Roads were submerged within minutes, and traffic nearly came to a standstill. Uneven roads and potholes make driving dangerous even without rain. Combined with waterlogging, it becomes a serious hazard. This clearly shows lack of preparedness,” said Haresh Bharwani, a resident of Kalyani Nagar.
Another resident, Rajeshwari Lakhani, added, “The situation turned chaotic after the showers around 4 pm. Waterlogging was seen everywhere. PMC is never prepared and only acts after complaints. It’s time authorities take responsibility and plan in advance.”
With the monsoon approaching, residents have stressed the need for immediate and decisive action to prevent large-scale inconvenience and ensure public safety in Kalyani Nagar.
