Pune: The Swargate rape case has sent shockwaves across the city after a 26-year-old woman was sexually assaulted inside an abandoned Shivshahi bus at the Swargate bus depot. Following a massive two-day manhunt, Pune Police successfully arrested the accused, Dattatray Gade, who had been on the run since the incident early Tuesday morning.
Police used drone surveillance to track down the accused, who was eventually found hiding in a canal pit near his village. Addressing a press conference, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar expressed gratitude to local residents for their assistance in the operation. He announced a ₹1 lakh reward for the individual who provided the crucial final tip-off that led to the accused’s arrest.
“We examined 23 CCTV cameras inside the bus depot and 48 external CCTV feeds, identifying the accused within two hours. Despite intensive searches in his village, he remained elusive until today. I extend my thanks to the local residents and will personally visit Gunat village to honor them,” said Commissioner Kumar.
Authorities revealed that the accused had rope marks on his neck, suggesting a possible suicide attempt, which is under investigation. Meanwhile, Dattatray Gade has been taken into custody and will be presented in court today.
