Pune: Rare Case Of Baby Born With Dengue From Mother Successfully Treated
In a rare medical case, doctors at a city hospital treated a newborn who contracted Dengue from her mother during pregnancy. The condition, known as perinatal Dengue transmission, can lead to serious complications for both mother and child if not promptly diagnosed and treated. A 33-year-old woman from Vishrantwadi, Pune, was admitted to a city based Hospital, where she tested positive for Dengue late in her pregnancy. At 41 weeks, she delivered a baby girl weighing 2.33 kg via emergency C-section due to complications. The hospital’s medical team successfully treated the preterm newborn who had contracted Dengue through the placenta.
A consultant neonatologist, explained that the mother had developed a fever three days before delivery, and her Dengue infection resulted in a low platelet count. Initially, the baby had difficulty breathing and required immediate resuscitation after birth.
Following the birth, the baby was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where she received oxygen support and intravenous fluids. Due to instability in her blood pressure, she was also given medication, and multiple blood transfusions were administered to manage bleeding complications. Dengue tests later confirmed the infection, and the baby’s platelet count was closely monitored. After a successful recovery, the baby was discharged, weighing 2.45 kg. Both mother and child are now in good health.
Dr. Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer at Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), noted that perinatal Dengue cases are rare in the city. He emphasized the importance of monitoring newborns closely for Dengue symptoms to prevent severe complications such as Dengue hemorrhagic fever. Efforts are underway to collect data on similar cases from private doctors to better understand and manage the condition.
