Pune, December 31, 2025: A series of targeted traffic management measures implemented by the Pune city police has led to a significant improvement in road movement, with average vehicle speeds on major roads increasing by over 10 percent, officials said on Monday.

According to data presented at the annual press conference, Pune police achieved this improvement by adopting Low Cost Traffic Management Techniques (LCTM). Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that, along with faster movement, the city has also witnessed a substantial reduction in severe traffic congestion at key locations.

Officials explained that coordinated efforts led by Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and other agencies, played a crucial role in the outcome.

As part of these reforms, authorities implemented 23 junction closures or right-turn restrictions, introduced seven one-way roads, synchronised 101 traffic signals, and modified road medians at 20 locations. Additionally, 19 bus stops were shifted, five luxury bus pick-up points were relocated, 12 arterial roads were resurfaced, six major bottlenecks were removed, and issues at 10 waterlogging-prone spots on main roads were addressed.

Police data shows that enforcement against traffic violations has also increased sharply. The number of e-challans issued rose from 10.32 lakh in 2023 and 11.04 lakh in 2024 to 18.37 lakh in 2025, indicating stricter monitoring and compliance drives.

Commissioner Kumar said the monthly average of severe traffic congestion incidents has dropped by nearly 50 percent. “Earlier, Pune recorded around 300 major congestion points per month. This figure has now reduced to about 150 in 2025,” he said, attributing the improvement to better traffic flow and stricter action against violations such as wrong-side driving, triple-seat riding and drunk driving.

Zero Tolerance for Drunk Driving

Police have reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against drunk driving. Between January 1 and December 23, 2025, a total of 6,281 cases were registered against motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, compared to 5,286 cases in 2024 and 384 cases in 2023. Enforcement was intensified following the high-profile Porsche crash incident earlier this year.

Action against triple-seat riding also saw a sharp rise, with 68,940 cases registered in 2025, compared to 48,479 in 2024 and 22,087 in 2023.

Road Accident Deaths Decline

The police also reported a decline in fatalities due to road accidents. So far in 2025275 people have lost their lives in 260 road accidents, marking a reduction from 345 deaths in 2024351 in 2023, and 325 in 2022.

Officials said the data reflects the impact of sustained traffic reforms, stricter enforcement, and improved coordination between civic and police authorities, while stressing that continued public cooperation is essential to maintain safer roads in Pune.
