Pune: The city witnessed over 60 fire incidents within 24 hours during Laxmi Pujan night, largely due to firecrackers bursting across various areas. According to the Fire Department’s main control room, 42 of these incidents occurred after 5 PM on the day of Laxmi Pujan itself. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though several properties suffered significant damage.

Fires were reported in multiple parts of the city, including Fursungi, Kharadi, Koregaon Park, Bhawani Peth, Nana Peth, Tingre Nagar, Baner, Market Yard, Katraj, Dhanori, Yerawada, and Hadapsar.

In Fursungi’s Kumar Park Infinia society, a rocket firecracker landed on the balcony of a 10th-floor flat, igniting curtains and leading to a major fire. Quick response from firefighters prevented further spread. In Kharadi’s Gera Society, discarded fireworks caused garbage to catch fire, while dry grass near the Hadapsar railway line was also set ablaze.

A fire was also reported near Chandrakant Shah & Co.’s office near Dulya Maruti Temple in Ganesh Peth. Other incidents included fires on terraces, in waste heaps, and even on a coconut tree in Viman Nagar’s Sanjay Park area. In Wadgaon Sheri, a two-wheeler caught fire, and similar minor incidents were recorded in Kalwad Vasti (Dhanori) and near Fadgate Police Chowky in Shukrawar Peth.

The series of fires has once again highlighted the importance of following fire safety measures during Diwali celebrations, especially while handling fireworks.
