Pune: Relief For 15 Lakh Vehicle Owners As Fitness Renewal Deadline Extended; Passing Process Resumes
Mumbai, April 18, 2026: In a major relief to commercial vehicle operators across Maharashtra, the stalled vehicle fitness and passing process has resumed after the Centre granted an extension for compliance with the Automated Testing Station (ATS) system until October 2026. The decision is expected to benefit nearly 15 lakh vehicle owners, including drivers of autorickshaws, taxis, school buses, and goods carriers.
The issue had arisen after the mandatory implementation of the ATS system for vehicle fitness checks, aimed at strengthening road safety standards. However, due to incomplete infrastructure and technical limitations in several Regional Transport Office (RTO) jurisdictions across the state, the vehicle renewal process had come to a halt in 11 key RTO regions.
The matter was taken up at the highest levels, following persistent efforts and coordination between the Devendra Fadnavis and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Acting on the representation, the central ministry approved a deadline extension, allowing vehicle owners additional time to comply with the new system.
The disruption had severely impacted the livelihoods of thousands of drivers and small transport operators, many of whom depend on daily earnings. With vehicle fitness renewals stalled, operations were affected, leading to financial stress across the sector.
Officials stated that the temporary relaxation will ensure that commercial vehicle owners can continue their services without interruption while the ATS infrastructure is further strengthened. The move is being seen as a crucial step in balancing regulatory reforms with ground-level readiness, offering significant relief to transport workers and their families across Maharashtra.
