An Indian Foreign Service Officer (IFS) & RPO (Regional Passport Officer) of Pune Dr Arjun Deore stressed on the importance of protecting the integrity of Indian passports.

He states that the Indian passport is a property of the Government of India and it should never be damaged by stickers. The cover of the passport proudly displays national symbols and security features.

As per information, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) states that travel agents are defacing the cover of the passport by putting stickers promoting different companies or agencies on it. This is not only a violation of the passport’s sanctity but also against the guidelines laid down by the Union Government for proper maintenance of the passport. The MEA has expressed serious concern over the growing misuse of the Indian passports for commercial purposes.

As the Head of Regional Passport Office in Pune, Dr Deore stressed on the significance of the national emblem which includes the Ashoka Chakra on the passport by stating that the national emblem plays a crucial role in enhancing security. Promotional stickers used by agents can blur the national emblem and interfere with these essential security features, which can lead to difficulties for Indian travellers at the immigration checkpoints.

In response, the MEA has issued a comprehensive advisory through its network of regional passport offices across India, as well as through Indian embassies and consulates worldwide. This coordinated effort aims to disseminate the message about the necessity of preventing passport misuse both domestically and internationally.

Dr Deore also said that the national emblem symbolizes the sovereignty and integrity of the country. Any change in the national emblem is considered as a violation.

Maintaining the National Symbol and Security Features of the Indian Passport is not only about national pride, but also about upholding the identity of the nation on a global stage.
