Pune, September 5, 2024: In response to rising complaints of private contract buses overcharging passengers and concerns regarding safety, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched an inspection campaign. This initiative, running from September 1 to September 30, 2024, aims to curb arbitrary fare hikes and ensure compliance with government-mandated fare rates.

The campaign follows reports of excessive fares being charged by private passenger buses, alongside incidents of fires and accidents. The RTO has ordered special inspection teams to take strict action against bus operators who exceed the per-kilometer fare limit set by the government.

Private bus operators are reminded that the maximum fare should not exceed 50% of the rates fixed by the government under Government Decision No. MVR-0421/P.No.378 (P.B.07)/Par-2 dated April 27, 2018. Fares must align with those charged by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) for similar distances. Operators are also urged to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and that all necessary documents are up to date to avoid penalties.

Passengers who experience overcharging or other travel-related issues are encouraged to report their complaints. They can contact the RTO via WhatsApp at 8275330101 or email at [email protected], providing their name, mobile number, and a photo of the ticket or receipt.
