In an innovative move to enhance road safety and traffic awareness, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has introduced a ‘Road Safety and Experience Laboratory’ within its learner’s license department. This new initiative aims to provide hands-on training and improve the understanding of traffic rules among prospective drivers.

The laboratory, developed in collaboration with the private organization ‘Cruising Safe,’ requires all learner’s license applicants to first complete a traffic awareness test before proceeding with the online learner’s license examination. The process involves three levels of tests designed to ensure comprehensive understanding and readiness.

At the initial level, candidates are tested on their knowledge of penalties for traffic violations. The second level assesses their grasp of various traffic rules, while the third level involves viewing a detailed video on road safety. This approach is intended to reinforce essential traffic regulations and cultivate responsible driving habits.

Archana Gaikwad, Pune Regional Transport Officer, emphasized the importance of this initiative in light of recent increases in road accidents in the city and district. “There is a pressing need to not only counsel drivers but also provide practical training to help prevent accidents. Through this laboratory, we aim to enhance the preparedness of learner’s license applicants,” Gaikwad said.

The ‘Road Safety and Experience Laboratory’ is one of three such laboratories established across the state, reflecting a broader effort to improve road safety through better training and awareness.” Looking ahead, the Pune RTO plans to incorporate simulators and virtual reality in future learner’s license tests to offer a more immersive driving experience.” stated Gaikwad

This initiative marks a significant step towards safer roads and more informed drivers, contributing to a reduction in traffic-related incidents.
