Pune RTO Takes Action Against 178 School Buses For Flouting Safety Regulations

Pune: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has taken action against 178 school buses and 84 other vehicles in Pune as they were found violating the safety regulations and collected a fine of Rs 29 lakhs 75 thousand rupees for violation of rules.

As per information, a traffic district-level school transport safety committee meeting was held at Police Commissionerate. Commissioner of Pune Police Ritesh Kumar said that strict adherence to school bus regulations is essential to prevent accidents or other incidents of life, physical, and mental danger during the transportation of students. It is mandatory to have a helper (attendant) in the school bus, and a female helper in the school bus carrying girls. The drivers of these buses should be well trained, morally competent, with a good track record. All of these things should be ensured by the School Transport Committee.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Sanjeev Bhor, Deputy Commissioner, Pune RTO said, “A website https://schoolbussafetypune.org has been launched to facilitate the work of the School Bus Student Transport Committee in the district. There are 9,663 thousand school buses in the district and 5,731 schools have registered on this website. The education department should take the initiative to make all the remaining schools register on it. The transport department inspected 709 school buses and 417 other vehicles between January 1 and July 10, 2023, to curb the illegal transportation of school students. In this, 178 school buses and 84 other vehicles were found guilty and 35 vehicles were impounded. In this action, a fine of 29 lakh 75 thousand rupees was collected for violation of rules.”

Sandeep Karnik, Joint Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar Magar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ajit Shinde, Regional Transport Officer, Dr Mitesh Ghatte, Pune Rural Additional Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Bhor, Deputy Regional Transport Officer and others were present.
