Pune: The Regional Transport Office, Pune has started taking action on the autorickshaw drivers and owners who haven’t calibrated the meters of auto-rickshaws despite the extension of time given, in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, starting February 1, 2023.

Auto rickshaw drivers were demanding an increase in rickshaw fares. According to the recommendation of the Khatua Committee, from September 1, 2022, RTO had given a fare hike of Rs 25 for the first one and a half kilometres and Rs 17 for every kilometre. It was made mandatory for auto rickshaw owners to calibrate the meters before charging the revised fare.

For meter calibration, the deadline was on October 31, 2022. Then RTO considered the demands of the rickshaw owners and extended the deadline to 31st December 2022 and then till January 31, 2022. But still, some auto-rickshaw drivers have not calibrated the meter. The RTO decided to take action on the rickshaw drivers as the meters were not calibrated despite repeated extensions.

“Auto Rickshaw owners who do not get the meter calibrated within the time frame will be subject to license suspension or compromise charges. And instead of suspension, the compromise fees will be taken after expiry which will cost Rs 50 each day, while the minimum Rs 500 and maximum Rs 2000 will be taken as compromise fees from the auto-rickshaw owners,” informed the Regional Transport Officer Ajit Shinde.
