Pune Airport serves as a gateway for travelers in our region, the absence of certain amenities for senior citizens is a matter of grave concern. Here are some of the key issues that need attention from the Airport Authorities stated residents of Kalyani Nagar and Wadgaonsheri.

1) Lack of Recliner Seats: There are no recliner seats or comfortable resting areas for senior citizens. Travel can be physically exhausting, and these individuals deserve a place to rest and rejuvenate.

2) Absence of Priority Check-In: Senior citizens, who may require additional assistance, do not have access to priority check-in counters. This results in longer queues and added stress during the check-in process. This should be made free of cost facility. The service charges are already taken by airports and airlines.

3) Inadequate Washroom Facilities: Inside the airport, washrooms lack basic amenities like automated room fresheners. Maintaining a clean and pleasant environment in and around washrooms is crucial, especially for senior citizens who may require frequent restroom visits.

4) Transportation for Senior Citizens: There is a severe shortage of passenger transport vehicles (PTVs) to assist senior citizens, particularly when they are leaving the airport. With the high volume of travelers, relying on just one PTV is impractical and often results in long waiting times. Also they have to pull their luggages.

Senior citizens face several challenges and problems when navigating airports. These issues can significantly impact their travel experience.

5) Physical Fatigue: The extensive walking required at airports, from check-in to security checks and gate changes, can be physically taxing for older travelers, especially those with mobility issues.

6) Limited Assistance: Senior travelers require assistance with carrying luggage or navigating the airport, but such assistance is not always readily available.

7) Information Accessibility /Communication Barriers: Language barriers are a significant challenge for senior citizens, especially when seeking information or assistance at the airport.Finding clear and accessible information regarding flight gates, boarding times, and amenities can be challenging for older travelers, particularly those who are not tech-savvy.

Considering the increasing number of senior citizens traveling through Pune Airport, it is imperative that the authorities address these deficiencies promptly. We propose the following solutions:

1) Installation of Recliner Seats: Provide designated resting areas with recliner seats for senior citizens to relax comfortably during layovers or flight delays.

2) Establish Priority Check-In Counters: Introduce priority check-in counters for senior citizens to expedite their travel process and reduce the stress associated with long lines. There should be special pass/ ID given to senior citizens for the airport.

3) Enhanced Washroom Facilities: Ensure the availability of automated room fresheners inside washrooms to maintain hygiene and improve the overall experience for travelers.

4) Increase Passenger Transport Vehicles: To cater to the needs of senior citizens, increase the number of PTVs available for transportation both within and outside the airport.

5) Free-of-Cost Facilities: Advocate for the provision of these facilities as a part of the government’s commitment to the well-being and comfort of senior citizens. Free assistance to the elders by airport / airline staff.

It’s important for airports to address these challenges and provide a more accommodating and respectful travel experience for senior citizens. Many airports have recognized these issues and are working to improve services for elderly travelers, but there is still room for further improvement in this regard.

Residents Informed, “We believe that the Pune Airport should be an example of inclusivity and convenience for all travelers, especially senior citizens who deserve a stress-free and comfortable journey. We request your support in shedding light on this issue to drive positive change and urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action.”
