Pune Shocked After Youth Allegedly Attacks Woman And Her Friend With Acid Over Relationship Dispute
Pune, May 22, 2026: A shocking acid attack incident has surfaced in Pune, where a 20-year-old man allegedly threw a corrosive chemical on a young woman and her male friend after reportedly being upset over her live-in relationship.
The Pune Police Crime Branch has arrested the accused from Karnataka following an intensive search operation. The accused has been identified as Shriram Madhu Sarunvar, aged 20.
According to police officials, the 21-year-old woman lodged a complaint at Bund Garden Police Station regarding the incident, which took place around 2 am on May 20 on Tadiwala Road in Pune.
Police said the victim and her friend work at a hotel in Pune. After completing their work shift early Wednesday morning, the two were heading towards their residence when the accused allegedly intercepted them on the road.
Investigators stated that the accused was reportedly angry because the woman was living with her friend in a live-in relationship. During the confrontation, he allegedly questioned why she was not staying with him and threatened her, saying that if she did not belong to him, he would not let her belong to anyone else.
Soon after, the accused allegedly threw a highly corrosive chemical, believed to be acid, from a plastic container onto the woman. The chemical reportedly caused severe burns on her neck, back and both legs.
Police said the accused also attacked the woman’s friend with the chemical, causing injuries to his leg.
After carrying out the attack, the accused allegedly fled the spot taking advantage of the darkness, while both victims were left injured.
The incident created panic in the city after reports of the acid attack emerged from a busy central Pune locality. Following the complaint, Pune Police launched an investigation and tracked down the accused in Karnataka, where he was taken into custody by the Crime Branch team.
Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
